L'DUCATION in road-safety measures,

skilfully and assiduously applied to children, was likely to yield great dividends. If they were taught to ride a bicycle properly, the knowledge would stand them in good stead, said Mr. Ernest Marples. Minister of Transport, in London last week. He was presenting Mr. Ernest Smith. a Rochdale bus driver, with a national trophy donated by Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd. Mr. Smith had been judged as having made the greatest contribution to child road safety last year. .

GERMAN AIR-COOLED ENGINES MINE new oil engines, including four 1.1 air-cooled units, have been introduced by Daimler-Benz, A.G. The largest in the new range is a V-12 supercharged engine developing 1,450 b.h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m. The.other eight engines are much smaller, and consist of airand watercooled versions of single-, twin-, threeand four-cylindered units with respective outputs of 20 b.h.p., 40 b.h.p., 60 b.h.p. and 80 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. There is a large measure of interchangeable components between the two types of engine, and all have separate cylinder assemblies.

GRANT FOR BRIDGE

AGRANT of £146,205 has been made to London County Council by the Minister of Transport towards the €201,000 needed to reconstruct Temple Mills Bridge, Hackney. The bridge, at present 18 ft. wide, carries the A106 over the River Lea. It was damaged by floods in 1953 and has only been temporarily repaired. The new bridge will have two 30-ft.-wide carriageways, and two 12-ft. 6-in.-wide footways.
