THE Minister or •Labour has

remitted to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal, which will hear the contending parties on May 17 in London, the dispute concerning the wages of vehicle 'bodybuilding employees. The trade unions have notified their failure to reach agreement with the employers on their application for an increase in wages of 4d. an hour for all adults, Wth proportional advances for other employees.

Although the amount asked for was refused, counter-proposals Were made by the United Kingdom Joint Wages Board. These were rejected by the Unions.

The date of the hearing by the Tribunal clashes with the annual conference of the National Employers' Association of Vehicle Builders at Llandudno.

MORE OILERS—DERV DELIVERIES UP 11% DECAUSE of the greater numbers of oil-engined vehicles in use, deliveries of dery to commercial users rose last year by about 11 per cent. to 1,410,000 tons compared with the figure for 1953. Commercial consumers also used more premier-grade petrol but less standard " grade. Deliveries of petrol to commercial users were below the 1953 level.

Last year, for the first time, states the Petroleum Information Bureau, the United Kingdom used over 20m. tons of petroleum products. Total inland consumption was 21,038,511 tons, an increase of more than 2m. tons on the 1953 figure.

The largest item was oil fuel (including. derv), at 6,350,000 tons. Motor spirit, the second largest item, accounted for 5,920,000 tons, an increase of 3 per cent. compared with the previous year's figure.

Consumption of lubricants at 845,000 tons showed an increase of 6 per cent.

Output of refined products last year slightly exceeded 28m. tons and enabled valuable exports to be made.

Birkenhead Watch Committee propose to purchase a Bedford ambulance and a cuffing-case ambulance from Garlick. Burrell and Edwards. Ltd.

Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation are recommended to buy two Park Royal bodies for reconditioned chassis, and four GUY chassis with Bond bodies.

Littlaborough Urban District Council are to buy a Karricr Bantam with interchangeable gullyemptying and refuse-collection bodies front Rixoes, Ltd. Bradford Cleansing Committee wish to buy a Karrier Gamecock 16-cu.-yd, refuse collector and a Gamecock 3-4-ton tipper from the Thornton Engineering Co., Ltd., and four Thames 5-cwt. vans from Messrs. Croydon Corporation are recommended to purchase two Daimler ambulances. a Bcdford-Martin Walter Sntintt-case ambulance and a Thames 10-cwt. van.
