SIR JOSEPH NA1.L, the new chairman of Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., announced last Friday that MR. H. M. ALDERSON SMITH had become deputy chairman, and M. GILRERT F. F. DAVIES had been appointed a director. MR. J. R. HOLT, company secretary, was to retire after 53 years' service.

MR. J. G. TIMPSON has been appointed to succeed the late MR. C. JACKSON, as general manager of Plymouth Transport Department. Mr. Timpson has been deputy general manager for the past nine years and before that was with the Barrow-inFurness undertaking. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the city council.

MR. STANLEY SMITH has been appointed to succeed M. K. W. P. KIRTON as traffic manager of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., and their subsidiary companies, from June I. Mr. Smith holds a similar position with the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd. Mr. Kirton is to become assistant general manager of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. MR. A. GLADSTONE ROSE has become a director of Triplex (Northern), Ltd.

MR. A. E. P. TURNER became a director and secretary of Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd., on May 1. MR. H. SARGENT, the former secretary, has retired. _ MR. J. E. Art-rus has been appointed transport manager of Cheltenham and Hereford Breweries, Ltd., in succession to MR. D. J. F. JACKSON.

MR. C. W. H. SPARROW was warmly thanked for his services when, last week, he attended his last meeting of the executive committee of the Road Haulage Association. He is retiring next week from the office of vice-chairman because of ill health.

SIR MALCOLM TRUSTRAM EVE, Q.C., has returned to duty as chairman of the Road Haulage Disposal Board after a long period of recuperation following an operation for appendicitis. He has been on a sea voyage to South America. He recently met a deputation from the Road Haulage Association.

MR. A. W. FERGUSON, Of Glover and Main. Ltd., has been elected chairman of the London branch of the Industrial Transport Association. The vice-chairmen are MR. C. E. DIXON (Glaxo Laboratories, Ltd.) and MR. C. N. GRADDON (Royal Borough of Kensington). MR. P. THORP (United Glass Bottle Manufacturers, Ltd.) is honorary secretary.

AS extensive re-surfacing works are being undertaken in Silver Street,' Doncaster, during the next four or five weeks, and on the main Al road in French Gate, near Clock Corner, drivers are advised to by-pass the town. Oneway traffic working has been in force since the works started, but it is not operating well at peak hours.

Drivers travelling north. arc recommended to divert to Thorne from Bawtry, and then to Knottingley.
