Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Secretary of State for Wales, Mr George Thomas. has invited tenders for the construction of the fourth and final stage (the Usk to Coldra, Newport, section) of the new trunk road between Monmouth and Newport.

• "Cross -wind warning wanted" is the heading to an FTA notice circulated last week. It states that the Association has told the Ministry of Transport that advance warning signs should be erected on motorways and other major roads at places where cross-winds pose special hazards—particularly for goods vehicles with high bodies or loads. It is also suggested that windsocks should be sited at the point (or points) where the full severity of the cross-wind is likely to be felt.

These recommendations have been made following a survey. by the FTA whichfists 55 places considered especially hazardous, Possibly because it is not illustrated in the "Highway Code", the International side-wind warning sign (reproduced above) is not as widely known as it might be. Ed.
