AN application by Fir Tree Coaches Ltd., of Crook, Co. Durham, for an excursions licence, was adjourned for two months by Northern Traffic Commissioners sitting at the County Hall, Durham, last week. The company, represented by a director, Mr. Fred Oswald, applied to run a service from Crook and Rudymere to Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, taking parties, mostly in the evenings, to the theatre and football matches in the three towns. Mr. Oswald said: ," The object of this application is to give the people of Crook something which is lacking

The company, which has no excursions licence, asked for a limitation of one vehicle to any one tour.

There were five objectors to the application, all local bus companies: Wilkinsons Motor Services Ltd., O.K. Motor Services Ltd., Shaw Bros., United Automobile Services Ltd., and Weardaie Motor Services Ltd, After being told that income of these rural bus services was Is. 4d. a mile and it cost the companies somewhere in the region of 2s. to run, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, chairman of the Commissioners, said: "These rural services run, at a loss. If the public wanted these daily services to keep going, the company, such as Weardale, must be allowed to recoup its losses on excursions ". Mr. Oswald replied: "Crook is in the non-development area but that does not mean that they have to die ".

Objectors said that if the licence were granted it would hit. existing operators and would in some eases jeopardize unremunerative stage fares services subsidized by excursions and tours. The Commissioners, called for more information from existing holders about what they have done or offered or were prepared to offer to theatre shows and cinemas. They also asked the applicant to submit more about the actual journeys provided for various organizations in Crook in the past few months. .
