embodied in the 1953 model of the Commer Express van. Among them are re-designed combustion chambers and a new Solex downdraught carburetter with a thermostatically controlled hot-spot manifold which improves performance and reduces fuel consumption.
Rubber seals have been fitted to the fulcrum-pin attachments of the independent front suspension, and greatly reduce the amount of lubricating required. Improved shock absorbers now provide greater stability and there is a controlled ventilation system. The cooling-water thermometer will be an appreciated new instrument.
The frontal appearance has been changed by providing a re-designed radiator grille and the van is given a smooth outline. The former distinctive features of this vehicle have been retained. They include an all-steel body welded to a box-section underframe; synchromatic gear change with a side-mounted gearbox which increases the floor space, and hydraulically operated brakes with two leading shoes on the front wheels. Easy steering is afforded by the camand-roller gear.
There is 100 Cu. ft. of loading space behind the driver and the lockable rear doors are of full width. Two comfortable seats are fitted as standard, that for the driver being fully adjustable.
Final drive is by spiral-bevel gearing and the stout propeller shaft has Hardy-Spicer universal joints with needle-roller bearings. Drivers will appreciate the press-button handles for the side doors.
