W/FIEN the application for higher VY fares put forward by United Welsh Services, Ltd., Swansea, came before the South Wales Licensing Authority, it was stated that on current working, the company could expect a profit of £600 this year. The earlier part of the hearing was reported in The Commercial Motor on February 27, when reference was made to the objectors' plea for an adjournment. This was later granted, and the hearing of the objectors' case to the applications made by five local operators was due to take place this week.

The higher fares proposed would augment the revenue of United Welsh by £55,000 a year. Since March, 1952, costs have risen by £42,272 a year. Mr. B. Griffiths, general manager, submitted that the estimates for depreciation were £10,000 short, making a total of 171,485. On this basis the company would incur a loss of 19,000 in the current year.

Applications by J. James and Sons, Ltd., Ammanford, Thomas Bros. (Port Talbot) Ltd.. and Afan Transport, Ltd., were later heard. Increased charges would augment the revenue of the James company by £9,380 a year, it was stated, and that of the two other concerns by £3,402 a year. Decision was reserved on all the applications.

Wolverhampton Corporation's application for permission to advance charges was heard by the West Midland Licensing Authority, last week. The undertaking had been granted three increases in the last three years, it was stated, and a deficit of £30,000 was expected this year. This would accumulate to £60,747 next year.

Mr. R. H. Addlesee, general manager, said the reserve fund totalled £115,000, out of which new vehicles had to be bought. The Licensing Authority said he would recommend the Minister of Transport to grant the application.

New fares have been proposed by Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd. Additions of Id. to workmen's returns up to 8d., and of 2d. to those of 9d. and over, are among the suggestions. It is also proposed to increase to 2d. all the lid. fares covering a journey over 0.75 mile, to raise the 2d. fare to 21d. and the 3d. to 31d. where they at present cover journeys over 1.5 and 2 miles respectively.
