T"• proposal of the Western National Omnibus Co., Ltd., to Plymouth Corporation, that their transport undertakings within a radius of 15 miles from Plymouth should be merged, created a sensation at Plymouth Transport Committee meeting, last week, for most of the members were unaware of the suggestion.
As Jeported last week, the company's suggestion is that the two transport undertakings shall be merged and be governed by four directors, providing equal representation. The combined organizations would run buses to Brent and Tavistock on the Devon side and Liskeard on the Cornish side, and to many villages between Plymouth and these places.
By a majority vote, the transport committee decided to appoint a subcommittee to talk over the suggestions with the company.
The matter is already causing fierce controversy in the city. Although. the undertaking has undergone heavy financial stress, its finances show a net surplus of 411,341 during the past nine months, compared with 42,952 a year ago.
Opponents of the proposal say that one reason why the company may have suggested the amalgamation is that the corporation is contemplating an extension' of its northern boundaries abutting the districts now served by the " Western National." Moreover, the necessity of providing a new central bus station at Plymouth is becoming urgent.
LARGEST NORTH WALES INDEPENDENT PASSES.
IT is understood that, last Sunday, Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., acquired the undertaking of D.M. Motor Services, Caernarvon, who are stated to be the largest non-combine firm in North Wales.
TRAM REPLACEMENT AT STOCKPORT.
STOCKP ORT Town Council has ratified the proposal of its tramways committee to purchase a further 12 Leyland double-deck buses. It is the intention of the tramways department to withdraw trams from Greek Street and Castle Street on the Edgeley route, and to operate the service with six or eight of the new buses. Double-deckers will also be 'used on the Hall Street and Adswood services.
The type of chassis chosen embodies a six-cylindered oil engine and the Leyland hydraulic torque converter, whilst the bodies will be of the Hybridge all-steel pattern,
