fined £6,700 after a worker slipped from a flatbed truck into an unguarded slurry mixer and had to have his lower leg amputated.
In a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecution, Stafford Magistrates' Court was told that contractor Colin Boon was in charge of a group of road labourers sealing a pavement in Hanford, Stoke-on-Trent, in September 2012. One of the workers, a 36-year-old man, slipped as he climbed from a lorry that was next to the petrol-powered mixer. He put his left leg down to steady himself but it went through the unguarded opening of the mixer. Rotating paddles in the mixer severely injured his leg, which resulted in it being amputated below the knee.
An HSE investigation found the guard over the paddles had been removed and not replaced. Boon, who was ordered to pay £8,000 costs, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
