Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

My clients Leyland Trucks and I were surprised to see the description of ERF (CM 23-9 May) as the "UK's last high volume independent truck manufacturer".

As I am sure you and most of your readers are aware, Leyland Trucks is 100% British owned and last year built 9,000 trucks—far more than ERF. Indeed Leyland is by far the largest manufacturer and exporter of trucks in the UK and employs more engineers than any other British competitor. Sadly it is now the only British-owned high-volume maker left.

The company employs 720 people in one of Europe's most modern assembly plants in Leyland, and made a net profit of 114m on a turnover of 1192m in the year to April 1995.

Martin Hayes, Communications advisor to Leyland Trucks.
