• This month's look at computers in the workshop will not be the last. The introduction of computers to plan, control and cost work within the workshop is as inevitable as the introduction of speed limiters to trucks, Workshop staff will have to become computer literate as well as take on the repair and maintenance of a growing number of electronic components.

Companies will welcome being able to retrofit the limiters in their own workshops but that is a oneoff operation as new vehicles will be fitted during build. It's the repair, maintenance and calibration that is an ongoing source of revenue. But are speed limiters doomed before they are fitted?

The emission limits will force the use of electronic control of diesel pumps and a speed limiting function will be an integral part of the control system.

Unless care is taken when drafting the regulations there is a danger that separate limiters will have to be fitted long after they are obsolete.

lithe speed limiting parts of the diesel control systems are to be acceptable to the VI then they must ail work with a common test box. That being the case they should all be able to be diagnosed by a common piece of equipment and which would save the industry a lot of problems.

There is a lot more than who fits a few speed limiters hanging on this legislation and the maintenance industry must make its voice heard above those with a vested interest in a segmented and mutually exclusive market.
