• Unit 91, the group formed to promote the interests of small hauliers, is to merge with the Transport Users Group.
Members at a Unit 91 meeting at the Alconbury BP truckstop on Sunday decided that, as the interests of the two associations overlapped, a single larger group would have more lobbying and commercial clout.
Unit founder Mike Pickering from Loughborough is to run TUG's southern branch and will be its spokesman on international issues.
The name TUG will remain but a new logo will be devised to signify the merger.
The move follows a split in Unit ranks when about half its members left to form a new association set up by former Unit members Mary and Dan Kinsella (CM 16-22 May).
That organisation, Port and Container Division United Transport Association, is to set up as a limited company dealing directly with customers from July.
