Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Steve Gray was not 'sold' on this year's Tipcon exhibition — too many unsold chassis made it less of an operator's event than it should be. Pictures by Brian Weatherley

year's exhibition at Tipcon not have been more of a ar to the state of the indus lough exhibits were at an ie high — as with last year aries were in a separate in below the main hall — chassis were unsold.

re often than not those that sold were either in the livf large operators or those a vested interest. Among

were several Tarmac les fitted with Su perstruckbodies. (Superstrucktures art of the Millfield Vehicle ), which includes Tarmac). Doked as if manufacturers assis were putting their unwares on show, thus ng the event yet further from the spirit of the exhii which is that it should be lerator's show.

.haps it is the low-cost asTipcon which attracts the manufacturers — one told me that his company's total costs would be around £3,500. But there's no doubt of the effectiveness of the exhibition. With so many captive operators in a fairly confined space, it offers an excellent sales platform.

Maybe because of the large number of Leylandsix-wheel Constructors at the exhibition, other makers were showing their competitors in this market segment. The Constructor six uses the narrower C40 cab (it's 300mm thinner) and has a choice of TL11A or TO 1D engines like the Cruiser. Outputs are 156kW (209bhp) at 2,200rpm and 133kW (181bhp) at 2,00Orpm respectively from the 11.1-litre six-cylinder engines.

Two gearboxes are also on offer: the Eaton D403 six-speed overdrive or a Fuller RT0609 nine-speed box. Features which should appeal to operators, if the CVMS study is correct, include special paint and anti-corrosion treatment, a tilt cab to 65' and service points beneath a front grille.

Nylon piping is used extensively for the braking system and the chassis frame is a parallel ladder type with channel section cross-members and flitching along the body length.

Three wheelbase options are available, 4.3, 5 and 5.5m (14.1, 16.4 and 18ft), and the Constructor six is intended to replace the Bison. The rear bogie differs from that of the Constructor 8 in that it has taper-leaf springs on the centre trunion rocking suspension.

Second of the new vehicles at Tipcon was another six-wheeler, the Mack MRE685RS 6x4, which is marketed in Britain by Renault Truck and Buses. It is a righthand-drive 24-tanner and looks, by European standards anyway, to be pretty old fashioned — especially the cab.

But it is quite light weight (under 7.5 tonnes) although at virtually £35,000 it's pretty pricey.

Power for the Mack is the 11 litre Maxidyne six-cylinder bocharged unit with 16; (217bhp) on tap at a fairly 1,800rpm. Torque is 1,15( (8481bft) at 1,200rpm. Ev thing on Macks seems to labelled Maxi and the gearbs no exception. Six forw speeds are available on Maxitorque box and the m at Tipcon had a 4.4m (14 wheelbase and Telehoist tip body with a capacity of 11.5 (15cuyd). Telehoist tipping . was also used.

Another six to be makini Tipcon debut — a rather lo one, as it was by itself on stand — is the Scania 1382 6x2 with lifting rear bogie. nia is testing the water with one, and aiming it at FR operators rather than regulai per users. Fitted with a Wi alloy body, it had the eight. Scania power unit and lewcomer to the tipping market is Crown, a Finish facturer, whose products

be marketed in the UK by ift of Shrewsbury. The of rams all of the singleand displacement type vilable for all three and axled rigids as well as artic g semi-trailers.

it basic rams make up the and each has, its maker special features such as chromed rams, one-piece lifting bracket, advanced g design and an hydraulic stop" circuit. There are five or six stage units to different body lengths the weight capabilities exfrom 28 tonnes (27.6 tons) tonnes (47.4 tons).

on was also the first pubhowing of the Gardner :T turbocharged diesel. )ally promised for the NEC year, it offers 171.5kW )hp). Despite the extra ment and changes that been necessary, the 6LXCT Is only 40kg (90Ib) more the naturally aspirated T. And it costs just £150

ail changes for the turboed installation include dif: big end bearings, small )earings and con rods as as new pistons. The oil has a larger capacity as the oil filter and there is a g chain and crankshaft )er. Gardner says, the T is ideal for rigid tipper :ations and that it is 3dBA 31 than the naturally aspiunit.

:RF had the new unit on at Harrogate fitted in a

model fitted with Norde er suspension. Another legger ERF had the CumNT 240 power unit, while Iree-axied M-Series on the rice stand featured a Cum

VT 555, 168kW (225bhp) r unit. This lightweight six remote mounted MRT 509, speed gearbox and Eaton le-drive rear-axle bogie. A ice Coachworks all-welded body completed the outfit. ong the body builders. Willad on show its joint dement with CF, the Weight trailer, with a special 1w neck aimed at improvability and reduce height. It fixed sides and a capacity 2cum (50cuycf) with an in lengthof 9.1m (30ft).

Welford Truck Bodies also a tipping semi-trailer on disr but this company use separate sub-frame at the f rather than a full chassis. 1/V tipped, the whole assembly E up pivoted around the wheels.

Yet another new tipping was shown by Allison Plant It was the RL-112 rigid lift slit on a Volvo F7 8x4 chassis wl also had an Allison all-a body.

BCT Equipment was shov a Ford Cargo with all-steel b and Dumpit Model DH75 scis type underfloor tipping g Launched earlier this year, electro hydraulic DH75 is air at vehicles in the 7.5 tonnes(' tons) class. The Ford, an 08, a 3.2m (10.5ft) wheelbase.

Craven Tasker has taken A tage to heart and produce range of tri-axle tipping trai aimed for 38-tonne (37.4gcw; they are claimed to gh 25 per cent improvement payload over two-axle trailer low-profile, 127mm (5in) ne( said to give operator stab while the single wheels of thE axle save weight. The Tas ULP 30/48X on show hai 36cum (47cuyd) capacity, RO-R axles and Edbro D5 five-stage single-ram tipp gear. It was of all-alloy mon( que construction.

No Tipcon would be comp without Edbro which this } was showing many exam' from its wide range of hydra equipment. This included ping gears and Cleanline bod the latter on Ford Cargo and L land Constructor six chassis.. 0811 Cargo chassis has a s body 3.8m (12.5ft) long oi 3.2m (10.5ft) wheelbase and fitted with Edbro YD11 gear, ( trally mounted.

The Constructor 6 had a 5. (19ft) body on its 4.3m (14. wheelbase and this alloy t was fitted with 5LNC lift gears. One of Dennis's Delta 1 also used Edbro gear but 1 time it was a BLB2L Buc loader.

The second Dennis on Hestair Dennis stand had Nev Charrold Ultralite bodywork Edbro tipping gear. It NA powered by a Perkins T6.35 with an output of 1151 (155bhp) and this was the f time Dennis has exhibited at 1 con.

Another newcomer, althoi. only in name, was Sandbach gineering with Foden moth Because, presumably, the cc pany is new, it was restricted space. Nevertheless, examp of its rubber suspension were show.
