.haps it is the low-cost asTipcon which attracts the manufacturers — one told me that his company's total costs would be around £3,500. But there's no doubt of the effectiveness of the exhibition. With so many captive operators in a fairly confined space, it offers an excellent sales platform.

Maybe because of the large number of Leylandsix-wheel Constructors at the exhibition, other makers were showing their competitors in this market segment. The Constructor six uses the narrower C40 cab (it's 300mm thinner) and has a choice of TL11A or TO 1D engines like the Cruiser. Outputs are 156kW (209bhp) at 2,200rpm and 133kW (181bhp) at 2,00Orpm respectively from the 11.1-litre six-cylinder engines.

Two gearboxes are also on offer: the Eaton D403 six-speed overdrive or a Fuller RT0609 nine-speed box. Features which should appeal to operators, if the CVMS study is correct, include special paint and anti-corrosion treatment, a tilt cab to 65' and service points beneath a front grille.

Nylon piping is used extensively for the braking system and the chassis frame is a parallel ladder type with channel section cross-members and flitching along the body length.

Three wheelbase options are available, 4.3, 5 and 5.5m (14.1, 16.4 and 18ft), and the Constructor six is intended to replace the Bison. The rear bogie differs from that of the Constructor 8 in that it has taper-leaf springs on the centre trunion rocking suspension.

Second of the new vehicles at Tipcon was another six-wheeler, the Mack MRE685RS 6x4, which is marketed in Britain by Renault Truck and Buses. It is a righthand-drive 24-tanner and looks, by European standards anyway, to be pretty old fashioned — especially the cab.

But it is quite light weight (under 7.5 tonnes) although at virtually £35,000 it's pretty pricey.

Power for the Mack is the 11 litre Maxidyne six-cylinder bocharged unit with 16; (217bhp) on tap at a fairly 1,800rpm. Torque is 1,15( (8481bft) at 1,200rpm. The second Dennis on Hestair Dennis stand had Nev Charrold Ultralite bodywork Edbro tipping gear. It NA powered by a Perkins T6.35 with an output of 1151 (155bhp) and this was the f time Dennis has exhibited at 1 con.
