competent transport manager based in Birmingham would not be accepted as suitable for vehicles operated from North Shields, the case of Arthur Turnbull (Transport) Ltd was a special one.

Northern Licensing Authority Bertram Foster said this when he granted the company's renewal application for five vehicles at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on May 21.

The company's new headquarters are at Erdington, Birmingham and there is a depot at Waterville Road, North Shields. Managing director Arthur Turnbull said it was a family business dating back to the start of the century.

The same pattern of operation between the Midlands and the North-east had been carried on for many years. Two vehicles leave from North Shields for Birmingham, and two from Birmingham for North Shields every night. They meet near Doncaster where the drivers are interchanged. Consequently, every vehicle is in Birmingham every other day, and under his direct supervision for maintenance.

It was a new fleet with vehicles being replaced every three years. Four drivers were employed at North Shields, two on day shift for collection and delivery, and a foreman. Records were checked at North Shields and then sent to Birmingham. He visited the depot every few weeks, and was in touch with the foreman daily.
