Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

increased again

A TWO-STAGE increase will soon put London Transport fares up by about 45 per cent. The GLC Labour majority has agreed to increases of 25 per cent this November and 20 per cent in June 1976.

The November increase—the second this year—supplements a hefty rates subsidy and is necessary to keep the LT deficit under control. Even so, it is estimated that an £80m subsidy will still be needed next year.

At the stormy GLC meeting some Labour members pressed for a 40 per cent increase this autumn, while others were opposed to any increase at all.

The issue will go to the GLC for formal approval in July.
