THE recent decision of IATA—the body which regulates air travel and air cargo carrying on most of the major airlines of the world—to reduce by 30 per cent air container rates could mean more business for air freight container carriers. Reason for this reduction is the inability of airlines to attract traffic in air containers and the unwillingness of air freight agents to utilize their own containers.
The new tariff, which comes into effect on October 1, applies to point-to-point consignments using the full 125x 88in. and 108 x88in. pallets with nets, or igloo containers. With the lower rate, the airlines hope air freight will be used more, but still the thorny question remains of who is going to own the pallets or containers.
