THERE was quite a gathering of the clans (haulage container) when Crane Fruehauf opened its new service and regional parts depot at Barking last month. Located on A13 trunk route between Tilbury and London, facilities include repairing and, where necessary. rebuilding of containers, Internal or external complete new panels can be fitted as well as corner posts, etc. Preventive maintenance will also be carried out—not that Crane's chief container salesman Ian Green (previously Thompson Trailmobile's top container man) would ever admit that CF units require much maintenance.
Among the interested spectators were Jack Savage, ma naging director of Beck and Pollitzer (Road Transport) Ltd. Paying particular attention to the CF skeletals on display, Mr. Savage was comparing them with the conversions he has recently carried out to the complete Beck and Pollitzer general haulage fleet of 27 semitrailers. For about £250 each, the trailer platforms have been widened to 8ft 21in. to accommodate ISO containers, with locking devices embodied into the platforms. So neat a job has been done that without the usual chains or rope the containers do not appear to be lashed in any way to the trailers. This, apparently, can cause snags. The police have been stopping Beck and Pollitzer vehicles accusing the drivers of not securing their loads properly—until they look underneath.
