In Durban recently a former chairman of the local Road Transportation Board was charged with receiving cash, crockery, radios, vegetables and other articles from non-White bus operators as an inducement for favouring them. It was alleged most of the gift i had come from the men who represented certain bus operators at the board's hearings. The chairman denied receiving gifts of cash or liquor but said he had received eggs and chickens from the bus operators' representative and had paid for them.
I realized payment in kind was still rife in South Africa but not for road service licences I
