Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• When testing the Leyland Atlantean fully automatic transmission double-decker bus (CM May 1611 reported a tendency for the engagement of first gear, when changing down, to produce a jerk, and I said I would carry out a further appraisal to see if the cause could he discovered.

Recently I visited the Coventry works of Self-Changing Gears Ltd., manufacturer of the automatic transmission, and spent some time with the test staff trying to re-establish the condition encountered on the first test. Apart from a couple of thousand more miles on the "clock", the bus was. I was assured, in an unchanged condition except that a minor electri

cal fault had been rectified.

Whether it was this that had caused the jerk, or whether the additional mileage was responsible, ' could not determine but I found that the unevenness had completely disappeared. Nor could it be reproduced although the company's fitters made a number of adjustments to that end.

The only other difference in the handling of the vehicle, between the two tests, was that the down-change from second to first, formerly taking place at 4 mph. now occurred at 2 mph. And once again there was no apparent explanation.
