B. A. Ridley. 56. has been appointed National Freight Federation rates officer. Mr. Ridley has been a transport man for over 30 years. In 1959 he became Londoradistrict manager B RS Ltd.—with an additional responsibility for the Continental Ferry Service—and was seconded in 1965 to become managing director, British Roadrailer Services Ltd.
Ian Carter, 35, has been appointed National Carriers Ltd. depot manager at Newcastle/Gateshead, in charge of an area that includes the whole of Tyneside and Durham. Mr. Carter has been depot manager at Nottingham since 1968. William Craggs, 50, becomes depot manager Leeds in charge of an area that includes Wakefield, alley and Pontefract. Mr. Craggs has been depot manager at Bradford since 1967. J. J. Heffron, 34, is to become managing director of Thoresen Car Ferries Ltd. when Knut Dybwad, the present managing director, returns to Norway in the autumn. Mr. Heffron is at present deputy managing director of Townsend and will relinquish that position but will remain on the Townsend board and on the board of European Ferries Ltd.
Bryan Thompson, 41, will become marketing manager of the European Ferries group from September 1. Mr. Thompson will retire as managing director of Hertford Public Relations Ltd.
R. Blackshaw, director and general manager of Star Bodies (BRS) Ltd., Hollinwood, Oldham, retired at the end of May, but continues as a parttime director. Mr. Blackshaw is succeeded by T. Roscoe, formerly assistant general manager.
C. J. Foxlee has been appointed secretary of Eastern Counties Omnibus as from July 1 in succession to G. C. Smith who as previously announced. has been appointed general manager of East Midland Motor Services. Mr. Foxlee has been accountant with the National Bus Company since January 1 1969.
Eric Gwyther. 41. has been appointed assistant general manager of Canransport (BPS) Ltd., at the company's Rowley Road. Coventry, headquarters. Mr. Gwyther was deputy traffic and transport manager with the Ford Motor Co., at Basildon before joining Cartransport.
ELECTIONS
INSTITUTE OF ROAD TRANSPORT ENGINEERS—North London centre: B. L. Veale has been appointed chairman, and not as we were previously informed (CM May 30) C. H. Farrow. Mr. Farrow, last year's chairman, becomes vice-chairman.
R. J. T. Hewitt has been elected national chairman of the Institute of Materials Handling. Mr. Hewitt has been chairman of the organization and development .committees and has served as a member on most of the others.
H. E. Osbom. comptroller, National Freight Corporation, has been elected treasurer of the Institute of Transport. Vice-presidents are: H. W. Elliott, managing director, Pickfords Ltd.: M. A. Holmes. chairman, London Transport Board; D. H. F. Joyce, transport licensing adviser, ShellMax and OP Ltd.; Sir Andrew Crichton, managing director. Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.: J. R. Stainton, deputy managing director, BOAC: D. McKenna, member, BRB. R. M. Robbins, member, LTB. has been elected librarian. As reported in CM May 23 Anthony Bull, vice-chairman, LTB, is 1969-70 president.
OBITUARY We record with regret the death of R. Howe.
Mr. Ron Howe, 43. was managing director of Howe's Transport (Enfield). a position he had held since the death of his father—the founder of the firm—five years ago.
