Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A REMARKABLE fork-lift truck has

been developed for the U.S. Army by the Clark Equipment Co., of Amorica. Known as the Military Ranger, it has been designed to provide exceptional cross-country capabilities and has an elevating system of novel layout.

The 95 b.h.p. engine drives through a hydraulic torque converter and the transMission affords four speeds forward and reverse. Drive may be transmitted to either the front or rear axle, and all wheels steer. When the front axle is driven, front and rear wheels turn similarly, so that the vehicle travels crabwise; when the rear axle is driven, the wheels steer about a common Centre. so that the machine can turn in a tight circle.

The fulcrum of the masts is well within the wheelbase, instead of at the front, and the masts swivel from a horizontal

• to an almost vertical position. This provides the main elevating movement, but in addition the fork attachment may be raised by a hydraulic ram. This attachment is pivoted at the end of a cranked extension to the elevating portion or the masts, and

the forks stay level irrespeetive of 'hoisting motions of the masts. The forks may also be moved independentlY; and it.is stated that they may be dug intothe ground, should the machine: become bogged, so that it can be extricated_by actuation of the ram.

The attachment also swivels sideways, so that the load on the forks can be maintained level should the machine tip to one side on uneven ground, and a side-shift device is a further refinement. The Military Ranger is built for 340n and 41-ton loads, and one version is made with sealed disc brakes to operate in 6 ft. of water, A simplified version of the appliance has been evolved, and the sole distribution rights for this type have been acquired by I.T.D., Ltd., 95-99

Ladbroke Grove, London, W.11, for the • -British market.

Appliances of this type might find valuable applications in the sphere of civil engineering. Their 'military use .lies in taking supplies. to forward positions, such as artillery posts, which could not be maintained by other means. •
