ARAPID expansion in the slate business was mentioned at Preston, last week, when T. J. Roberts, Menai Bridge, Anglesey, sought an additional vehicle on B licence to cover slate haulage to Scotland. Mr. J. Edward Jones, for the applicants, said Roberts already had a contract-A-licence vehicle carrying slates for J. H. Rylands, Ltd., Blackburn, but could not cope with the amount of work being offered.

Mr. T. Bell, a Rylands sales representative, said Mr. Roberts carried slates to all parts of the country, because road transport was cheaper than rail ad there was less danger of breakages. If more facilities were refused, Rylands might lose some of their business.

Replying to Mr. P. Kershaw, who objected for British Railways, Mr. Bell said he had no details of tonnages or journeys Made by Mr. Roberts. Mr. Edward Jones explained that a Rylands director, who had been expected to give evidence, was on holiday.

Mr. I. R. Lindsay, North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, adjourned the case until this director could be present. He said he thought Mr. Ben was an inadequate witness who did not know enough about the circumstances of the application.
