A N early move by the Minister, of

Transport is expected on a proposal for increasing the maximum gross laden weight of tankers from 24 tons to 28 tons. The suggestion was put forward by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. after discussions with the oil companies, and the Ministry have replied that consideration is being given to it. It is believed that the secretaries' of the S.M.M.T. and 'the National' Road Transport Federation will shortly be asked to detail their ideas. The argument in favour of 28-ton-gross weight tankers is that, whereas a full loud of petrol falls within the 24-ton limit, a similar quantity of heavy oil raises the weight to 28 tons. This proposal was foreshadowed exclusively . by The Commercial Motor on March 14.

EX-HAULIER NOW f40-A-WEEK SALESMAN

A FORMER coal haulier told Walsall f-1 Bankruptcy Court on Tuesday that he was now a £40-a-week car salesman, and offered to pay £10 a month towards his debts. Raymond Cockayne, Ironstone Road, Chase Terrace, near Walsall, admitted liabilities of £364 and claimed assets estimated to produce £400.

It was stated that he began as an owner-driver in 1954 with a petrol vehicle which, in the following year, he changed for an oiler costing £2,304.

This vehicle proved unsatisfactory, and £486 was spent on repairs until he ceased business in August last. " If I had kept to the petrol vehicle, I should have been in business today," he said.
