Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HEARING the application of Messrs. Hunter and Nelson, Arbroath, for fares variations ranging from 163per cent. to 661 per cent., the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority last week declared: "What you ask for rather shakes us." The application was the firm's third in three years. Decision was deferred.

Three Welsh operators, Messrs. D. Jones and Sons, Carmarthen, Messrs. Ebsworth Bros., Laugharne, and Messrs. Lloyd-Jones Bros., Ystrad Meurig, were recently granted higher rates by the South Wales Licensing Authority. Granting the variations sought, Mr. Thom, the South Wales Authority, said that these increases made a heavy impact on the travelling public, but the alternative was the restriction of services.

Proposals to raise charges in the Gloucester area have now been filed by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd. It is suggested that the new scales should be on the following basis:--Up to 0.8 mile, lid.; 0.9-1.4 miles, 2d.; over 1.4 miles, existing fares to be increased by id. Workmen's return fares will be based on the new single rates, if the application succeeds. About 20 bus companies operating in the Yorkshire Traffic Area are applying for modified rates for excursions and tours, workmen's services and contract tickets. The operators include Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., and the Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd.

MR. BRAITHWAITE VISITS THE NORTH

nURING the Parliamentary recess at Whitsun, Mr. Gurney Braithwaite, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, travelled to York to discuss road-safety matters with the council. This week he extended his tour to Leeds and Hull, and will return to London along the Great North Road on Monday.

Shortly after last Christmas, Mr. Braithwaite toured the West of England and South Wales, and consulted accident-prevention authorities.
