Problems with maintenance have led to the one vehicle operated by Neath-based builders Dennis and Raymond Sparkes, trading as Sparkes Bros, being suspended for a fortnight.

When the brothers appeared before Welsh Traffic Commissioner David Dixon at a Cardiff disciplinary inquiry he heard that they had replaced their A-registered truck with a newer model. There was no regular inspection system and no proper documentation was kept but the vehicle had passed every annual test it had been put in for. Raymond Sparkes said they had not sustained any convictions, but the vehicle had picked up a delayed prohibition for a fuel leak, an air leak and loose battery straps. It was in the garage at the moment being prepared for clearance of the prohibition.

Ile accepted that they should have been keeping records; they had now bought a maintenance contract with a commercial garage for the vehicle to be inspected every six weeks.

Suspending the licence, the TC said it had been a close call but he had decided not to revoke it.
