• The Ford P100 pickup with a turbo-diesel engine is now on sale at dealers, as predicted in CM (4-10 May).

Unusually, Ford has not yet staged an official launch for the vehicle, but will begin promoting it next week. Nonetheless, the company does expect big things of the diesel, and is predicting a 50/50 sales split between petrol and diesel along with an overall increase in sales (it sold 8,190 in 1988).

Ford is selling the diesel in two trim levels: a Popular at 27,595, and a Standard at 28,117. The petrol P100 currently retails in one form at 26,895: the less powerful, naturally-aspirated Bedford Brava diesel sells for 27,105.

With diesel and petrol options now available, the obvious direction for Ford to take is a 4x4 version, perhaps using Sierra four-wheel-drive components, but Ford states that the production volumes are too low to justify the investment.
