Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The author of the article giving advice on depot design for turn-round, in the editorial colour section of this issue, is labelled "an architectural consultant", but Jolyon Drury is no head-in-clouds theorist. Apart from being a reader of CM for 10 years (which immediately elevates him in my estimation) he drove virtually every type of truck when he was a student at Cambridge. This not only earned him the useful odd bob or two but, he tells me, it gave him access to factories and warehouses from the driver's angle — an experience which was not totally unconnected with his deciding to specialize in the industrial side of architecture. He says he's now seriously thinking of taking the hgv driving test for Class 1, because he not only enjoyed his truck driving (as a "dreaded" agency driver, as he puts it),

but is certain that the experience would be valuable in his planning work.

A practical approach which I would urge upon vehicle designers, coach operators and managers of bus undertakings, among others. There's no substitute for suck-it-andsee.
