• A Danish container lorry driver who whiled away the North Sea crossing from Esbjerg to Great Yarmouth by drinking a bottle of whisky was banned from British roads for 12 months and fined £100 by Blofield, Norfolk, magistrates on Monday. Driver Andres Frode Jessen pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his blood.
Police Sgt. D. Elliot said that Jessen's lorry was seen at the head of a long queue of cars on the main Great Yarmouth to Norwich Road on April 2. The lorry was wandering about the road and drivers behind were clearly afraid to pass. When eventually a police car managed to get ahead and stop the driver he was given a breath test. The alcohol count was 283mg.
The chairman of the Blofield bench, Mr C. E. Kevill-Davies, referred to the danger of Continental drivers drinking too much duty-free drink on incoming ferries. They represented with their huge container lorries a danger to the public and the court was bound to take a serious view, he said.
