AT their next meeting on July 25, the National Executive Committee of the Road Haulage Association will examine the question of the granting of A licences for vehicles which previously worked under C-hiring margins. They agreed to do so at last week's meeting at the request of the Association's licensing committee.

It was agreed that the immediate past national chairman should be invited to serve on the chairman's committee and the National Executive.

There was a long discussion on the speed limit on heavy goods vehicles. It became evident that negotiations would be complicated because, apart from the parties immediately concerned —the R.H.A., the unions and the Ministry of Transport—the Wages Council would probably ultimately be concerned.

The appropriate authorities are to be reminded that an articulated tractor weighing not more than 3 tons unladen does not have to have its unladen weight marked on it. In some cases the police have adopted the view that an articulated vehicle should be considered as a whole and that the weight of the semi-trailer should be taken into account. Although such a prosecution may be unsuccessful, the defendants may have difficulty in securing costs and are unfairly penalized.

The Licensing Authorities, whose offices are now to be closed on Saturday mornings, are to be asked to have available skeleton staffs on those occasions.

It was agreed that business sessions at the conference in Bournemouth in October should be longer.

A cal! for a national policy on rates tor haulage for local authorities was passed to the Association's rates committee.

ONE DEPOT FOR TWO

A NEW depot with accommodation for 38 buses has been opened at

Shafton, near Barnsley, by the Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd. It replaces two garages taken over from L. and Y. Motors, Ltd., in 1934 which, together, had a capacity of only 13 vehicles.

The opening ceremony was performed last week by Maj. F. S. Eastwood, chairman of the Yorkshire Licensing Authority.

The depot covers an area of 23,210 sq. ft., and comprises a garage, repair bay with two inspection pits, offices, mess rooms and stores.

OBITUARY

WE regret to record the deaths of MR. H. J. BLIGHT and MR. TAYLOR EARNSHAW.

Mr. Blight was Eastern Counties sales representative of Morris-Commercial Cars, Ltd.

Mr. Earnshaw was for many years director and secretary of the Vale Motor Co. (Whitworth), Ltd., hauliers, Whitworth. He was 77.
