Maritime Transport is looking forward to the launch of its distribution operation in 2011, which will see it running an overall operation not dissimilar to the old Russell Davies model. However, Alan McNicol, the firm’s finance director, notes: “It is about doing right for the business in 2010 rather than copying a historical model.” It is being set up partly in response to retailers taking a more active interest in their supply chains, but also due to the potential growth of port-centric logistics. Williams feels that the firm is ruling itself out of potential business in this area by offering only a container transport solution.
An initial batch of 50 SDC curtainsiders will form the backbone of the fleet, and Williams expects first year annualised turnover of around the £10m mark. Equally, he’s keen to make a success of the operation and says that if it needs to buy scale, then it will do, looking for a bolt-on acquisition in the £5m-£15m bracket.
