Pioneer, sold by DaimlerChrysler in the UK, is powered by a 2.5-litre 16-valve turbo-diesel engine blasting out an impressive 141hp and a generous 340Nm of torque, driving through a fivespeed transmission and Jeep's "Command Trac" four-wheel-drive system. This features a 'shift on the fly function that allows you to switch from rearwheel to high-range 4x4 at up to 55mph.
More expensive than the likes of Nissan's Terraria and the Santana PS10 the Jeep is positioned to the top of the market and in-cab comfort reigns. Yet, while everything is well put together and oozes quality, there's quite a bit of noise intrusion under acceleration, detracting from the impression of luxury.
The load area is a bit restrictive at 1.4m3, but the access to the back is good, thanks to the side doors — left in place from the car conversion —and a decent rear-door design.
