Toyota made big strides in this sector with the launch of the new Hiace in 2001 and the arrival of new common-rail diesel engines have given a welcome performance boost. AJapanese-built 2.5-litre engine is used throughout the line-up, giving power options 01 88 and 102hp, some way behind the equivalent offerings from Nissan/ Renault/Vauxhall and the new VW Transporter.

ABS was made standard across the range a couple of years ago. improving safety, though handling and driver comfort remain only adequate.
