Toyota made big strides in this sector with the launch of the new Hiace in 2001 and the arrival of new common-rail diesel engines have given a welcome performance boost. AJapanese-built 2.5-litre engine is used throughout the line-up, giving power options 01 88 and 102hp, some way behind the equivalent offerings from Nissan/ Renault/Vauxhall and the new VW Transporter.
ABS was made standard across the range a couple of years ago. improving safety, though handling and driver comfort remain only adequate. Load area is usable, with the long wheelbase version altering 2.98m of bed length, and 6.5m3 space; the shorter wheelbase gives 5.4m3 load space. The lack of a high-roof version restricts the appeal of Hiace compared to others in the sector.
