Rover's return to the van sector was unexpected. butthe car-derived commercial is deserving ol close inspection. Little more than the Rover 25 car with the rear seats removed and windows blanked out the Commerce is hampered slightly by the car's mid-90s pedigree— load access isn't the easiest due to a big lip on the door aperture and the payload is limited.
That said the 2-litre diesel packs a decent punch and proved economical in our tests. The interior is well appointed, though the ride tends to be firm and sporty regardless of load — it can get choppy on poor surfaces but absorbs bumps well. The doors close with a surprisingly high-quality thud and the driving position is good for a while. thanks to comfortablyshaped seats, although we found the cushions lobe on the short side and this became tiresome atter a couple of hours.
Strong build quality Good speed and fuel economy Load access difficult Seats uncomfortable for long journeys
VERDICT
British-built Commerce has potential, though there are more modern, better suited options on offer
