Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• About 140 drivers and 30 mechanics employed by Total Oil have voted 55% in favour of accepting an enhanced pension package from the company instead of an increase in their basic pay.

The deal follows a 4.5% pay rise in November 1992 which took basic salary for drivers, working mainly with 38-tonne vehicles, to £12,7(X).

The new pension deal increases the proportion of drivers' pay which is subject to company contributions by 15% or £2,540 by including shift pay as pensionable salary for the first time.

The amount the deal is worth to each driver depends on age and the amount of shift work done: the company declined to disclose any details of average contributions.

The deal benefits drivers and mechanics at Total Oil depots in West Bromwich; Nottingham; Leeds; Bramhall, Cheshire; Killingholme, South Humberside; Langley, Herts; Grays, Essex; and Ipswich.
