Network of Sales and Service centres

E formation of a new trailer division, the establishment of 17 sales, service and spares centres in dock and industrial areas, and details of production at its new Basingstoke works has been an nounced by Scammell Lorries Ltd.

The new division is headed by Mr. M. Margetts as sales manager directly responsible to the Scammell board, and separate design office, sales engineering and publicity sections have been formed to serve the new division.

As well as the sales/service centres, a sales team of representatives with specialized trailer knowledge has been organized. The trailer centres which have been or are being established are based partly on the existing Scammell heavy vehicle distributors but others will be large dealers in BMC, Bedford, Ford and other makes.

The Basingstoke (Thornyeroft) works, which has a planned production capacity of more than 50 Challenger fifth-wheel semi-trailers a week, has been laid down as a flow-line operation and will produce all the Challengers made. The automatic-coupling trailers will continue to be made at the Moor Park works, Watford, as will the lighter types of fifth-wheel semi-trailer.

Scammell confirms that the Fourtrak model will still he made and reveals that although thought has been given to the production of a three-axle semi-trailer there are no plans to build any.

Brake conversion kits for Scammell trailers that require them to meet the new regulations for artics will cost £49 10s. net.

As well as the trailer centres themselves, each area will have a widespread network of dealers offering sales and service facilities. The actual trailer centres are said to offer these facilities:—

The supply and fitting of fifth-wheel plates to all makes of tractive units, with a "turnround" of the chassis within 48 hours: a complete range of coupling and trailer spares; a full range of trailers for sale from stock; a range of reconditioned assemblies including Scammell autocoupling undercarriage; and the ability to make all types of conversions including chassis modifications to meet the new brake regulations. The areas chosen for establishment of Scammell trailer centres are: Accrington, Ashford (Kent), Bristol, Birmingham, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hull, Liverpool, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Nottingham, Norwich, Peterborough, Southampton and London.

Firm now named after its managing director THE FIRM of J, H. Sparshatt and Sons (Southampton) Ltd.—now merged with and wholly owned by Steels Garages Ltd.—has changed its name to George Sparshatt (Southampton) Ltd. because of its identification with Leyland Motors vehicles and because its managing director, Mr. George W. Sparshatt, has been associated with Leyland vehicles since 4926 and continues his active support of the company.
