BIRMINGHAM Public Works Committee has been accused of "procrastination" about banning all-night and week-end parking of lorries in city streets.

Coun. Ken Barton, who last June obtained a majority on the city council in favour of a ban, said that the latest decision of the committee to seek the support of the Association of Municipal Corporations was "flouting a decision of the council".

He said. "The committee does not need the support of the association or anyone else. When I moved this amendment in June, the Minister of Housing and Local Government had already said in Parliament that this was a local matter and authorities had powers to deal with it".

The Town Clerk had apparently advised the committee that it had power to make a by-law which was "certain and reasonable", but that a by-law banning parking from all streets was unlikely to be considered reasonable.

"But my information is that the Minister has already confirmed similar by-laws for other local authorities, and there is no reason why one for Birmingham should not be confirmed", said Mr. Barton.

Plans to build a lorry drivers' motel in Ladywood with restaurant, accommodation and guarded parking, are being drawn up by the corporation.
