GLASGOW Transport Department, which returned a surplus last year of £116,124, will show a loss during the year ending on May 31, next, it was stated at a meeting of Glasgow Corporation.

Coun. James Bennett, transport convener, said they had at present before them a wage claim on behalf of 6,000 drivers and conductors, and this would have to be dealt with very soon,

The department, he added, were operating under extreme difficulties. Not only had they to face greatly increased expenditure but they were operating with an acute shortage of staff. There were at present vacancies for more than 600.

The corporation endorsed a decision not to appoint a deputy manager. and agreed that Mr. Ian L, Paton, secretary of the transport department, should be in charge in the absence of the manager. Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, with a responsibility payment of £150 a year.

Describing as false economy the proposal not to appoint a deputy manager. Coun. Gordon Reid moved that the post be advertised so that they could attract men with wide administrative experience in transport undertakings, "It might well be," he added, "that such men are very scarce, but at least we should test the market."
