40BILE libraries are greatly IVIincreasing in number. In "The Commercial Motor" on December 2, mention was made of a fleet of such vehicles being introduced by West Riding County Library.

Based on ex-W.D. Bedford M.W. chassis, bodies for nine of these vans are being constructed by Fielding and Bottomley, Ltd.., Wellington Street South, Halifax. Ash framework is used for the fuH-fronted body, which is panelled in aluminium-faced ply wood. Oak bookshelves, finished in the natural colour, carry 1,000 books, which are retained in position by sliding blocks. Hinged shelf extensions, faced with rubber and linked by a connecting bar secured by one bolt, prevent the books from falling while the vehicle is on the move. Lockers are provided for the driver and the librarian.

A swivel seat in the forepart of the body enables the librarian to face forward when travelling, or to the side when the van is stationary. The librarian's desk is hinged at the forward edge to provide access to the engine cowling. A Clayton heater is fitted behind the driver's seat, and a battery charger is carried in a locker in the side of the body. Tools and spare wheel are housed at the rear.
