I N a prolonged debate on the Budget,
the French Assembly has forced the Government to abandon certain proposed taxes on road transport. One proposal in the new Budget affecting the stamp duty on transport contracts has been voted, but others have not found favour.
As an alternative to a tax on share transfers the Government proposed to tax heavy transport vehicles. This, however, was defeated. So was an attempt to raise revenue by imposing a tax of 15 per cent. on tyres, which was expected to produce up to 7,000,000,000 francs.
An increased tax on oil fuel, expected to bring in 2,000,000,000 francs, was also defeated. It is believed, however, that a proposed tax on permits to operate vehicles was passed by the Assembly,
