Full Details of the Latest Entrant into the Field of Small Vehicles for Local-delivery Duty
WE present to our readers this week a brief description of the Triumph 5-cwt. van, which appeared as a new model in our specification tables published on December 16. The new commercial model is developed from. the company's private-car chassis, and is the latest entrant into the field of smartlooking and speedy little vehicles, well suited to the needs of retailers and others requiring efficient local-delivery service. The vehicle is introduced by Triumph Commercial Motors, Ltd., Coventry.
The body capacity is 55 cubic ft., and
the pay-load capacity 5 cwt. The wheelbase is 6 ft. 9 ins, and the track 3 ft. 74 ins., so that the space behind the driver's seat measures 3 ft. 6 ins, in length, a minimum of 3 ft. 3 ins, in height, and 3 ft. 10 ins, in width. The height of the floor is only 1 ft. 91 ins., which ensures easy loading facilities, there being a pair of doors at the rear.
As is customary with vehicles of this kind, the space to the left of the driver may be used for long articles, the available length being 7 ft. 7 ins. The overall length of the vehicle is 10 ft. 5 ins.
The Triumph four-cylindered side
valve engine of 56.5 mm. bore and 83 mm. stroke is used, this having a piston-swept volume of 832.24 c.c., so that the R.A.C. rating is 7.9 h.p. The engine develops the maximum of 20.03 b.h.p. at rather a high speed, namely, 4,000 r.p.m. There is a three-speed gearbox, the forward ratios being 6.25, 11.1, and 21.8 to 1, whilst the reverse ratio is 27.2 to 1. The transmission is through a single-plate clutch, and there is a divided propeller shaft conveying the drive from the gearbox to an under slung-worm rear axle. The chassis weighs 71 cwt. and the body 4 cwt. The price is £125, this including five wheels with 27-in. by 4-in. tyres, Lucas electric starting and lighting set. , Within a few weeks we shall publish a full road-test report.
