Morecambe to Try Oil Engine.

The transport committee of Morecambe Corporation has accepted the offer of Oswald Tillotson, Ltd., Burnley, to equip a six-wheeled bus with a Dorman 4j.U.1L-type oil engine, at a cost of £362, including the provision of a new plate clutch. The transport manager, Mr. H. B. Sharpe, states that the conversion will result in an economy of £234 per year in the operation of this bus.

The Value of a 25-year-old Flre-engine.

Having failed to obtain an offer above 15 for a 25-year-old Mercedes fireengine, the fire-brigade committee of Chelmsford Corporation has had a report on the matter by the chief officer of the brigade.

He states that certain vital components need considerable repair or replacement, and that two men are required to start the engine. Nevertheless, the machine is to be dismantled, some of the parts being kept as spares and the rest of the outfit sold for scrap metal. In this way it is estimated that the fire-engine will be worth £50 to the corporation.

Fewer Hackneys at Swansea.

Swansea Watch Committee has issued 103 hackney-carriage licences for 1923 against 120 last year. Owing to trade depression 16 fewer taxicab licences were sought.

Post Boxes on Buses.

Sheffield Corporation's tramways committee has agreed to a suggestion of the G.P.O. authorities that the pay-, meat for the conveyance of postal boxes on the tramcars and buses should be at the rate of 13 10s. per box per annum, instead of the lump sum of £150 per annum, as at present.

Bus as Travelling Showroom.

In order to encourage the greater use of electricity, Lytham St. Annes Corporation has converted a bus into a travelling showroom, with 1400 worth of apparatus on board, to give demonstrations at wayside cottages and farms.
