The call, from RHA chief mecutive Roger King, comes ifter he visited Germany to find )ut about its distance-based -cad-user charge scheme which begins on 31 August. All 3erman trucks fitted with onpoard units (OBUs ), which -ecord distance travelled on the i..rtobahns, will be provided free charge.
King says this charging system will help provide a panEuropean level playing field for UK operators, but the Treasury must consider the implications of Germany providing free OBUs.
"The German system is far more advanced than we had anticipated," he says. "We can expect something similar on UK roads although there will have to be some charges."
