• London Waste (LW) has become the first waste company in the UK to convert Its entire fleet to natural gas.
The decision was made in light of the company taking its haulage operations back in-house and the subsequent purchase of nine 44-tonne Fodens.
LW, which handles over one million tonnes of waste every year, will exploit dual-fuel technology in order to cut costs and reduce environmental pollution. The vehicles will retain the compression ignition system and can switch over to diesel operation at any time. Each vehicle cost £18,000 to convert after help from a government grant.
LW's waste operations manager, Julian Appleby, says the cost benefits of liquid natural gas (LNG) will be more apparent in the long-haul journeys. He estimates these journeys could use up to 70% LNG against 30% diesel.
"With figures like that, the pay-back is something like two years," he says. "It's about £8,000 saving per year on fuel."
