• Three union officials are thought to be front-runners to take over one of the most highprofile negotiating jobs in road haulage.
The Transport & General Workers Union is seeking a new national secretary for road transport after Danny Bryan retired from the post last month.
The job carries a salary of 143,896 and involves acting as lead negotiator with employers over pay and conditions for drivers throughout the country.
One T&G insider says two
Midland officials, John
Pargeter and Julie Long, and Kent-based Billy Lamb are front-runners to take over because they have experience in the sector already. "John looks after all the car delivery drivers," he says.
Bryan, aged 57, took over the post in 1994 having previously been the union's national officer for public services.
Ron Webb, T&G national secretary for docks and waterways, is taking over Bryan's responsibilities until a replacement is appointed within the next two months.
Webb, who already leads pay negotiations with several big hauliers, says: "I will be pursuing the T&G's agenda of decent pensions and making progress on the union's campaign for a 48-hour working week."
