Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NI As in the UK, Chereau is represented in Ireland by a single exclusive distributor—County Carlow-based Victor Treacy International Trailers. Owner Victor Treacy has been working for Chereau there since 1989 and, although he can't confirm the BO% estimate of Irish market share suggested by Pratt, he does say Chereau semi-trailers are extremely popular there.

"I suppose it's down to the quality," says Treacy. "We've had Chereau trailers on the road since we started in 1989 and they're still in good condition. They're certainly built to last." As in Britain, 13.6m triaxle semi-trailers are easily the most popular seller. "I'd say they account for around 95% of our sales," he says. Despite this, they still only tend

to sell in ones and twos, he admits, reflecting the average Irish fleet size.

Rigids, by contrast, are a very small market for Chereau in Ireland—mainly due to the shipping costs of sending a chassis out to France and getting the finished vehicle back home again. "That means they're a lot more expensive than a similar body produced in Ireland," says Treacy.

There's obviously no need to ship anything out to France with semi-trailers, and trailers being shipped back to the UK can at least be used to carry a load which helps keep prices down, he adds. "We have an international transport operation too, so we can use a tractor that's already out there to drive back with the trailer and a return load."
