Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Kwik-Fit came bottom of the league in a recent survey of fast-fit exhaust centres carried out by the Consumers Association magazine

Which?

During the survey Which? investigators took a D-reg Metro with a rattling but otherwise sound exhaust to more than 200 fast-fit centres. They asked for advice but did not have any work done.

Of the 43 Kwik-Fit centres visited, 12 said that all or part of the exhaust needed to he replaced. Since the survey chief executive Tom Farmer has lectured all 2,000 Kwik-Fit staff on the company's code of practice. Under this code two fitters must inspect any job before a quote is given: the company says that this did not happen at its centres which gave the wrong advice.

Kwik-Fit has also redesigned its inspection report form to ensure that the code of practice is followed at all 433 centres.

Which? also visited eight centres run by the north-western chain. Smiley, and three of them advised researchers to have unnecessary work carried out.

Advice given by ATS and MotorWay was rated "good", while Halfords, National, Superdrive and Tyreservices were rated "average".
