• United Parcel Services could become the first parcels company to own a UK airport. It is considering buying the Ministry of Defence's airfield at Thurleigh, Beds, which was shortlisted to be London's third passenger airport in the 1960s.
The MoD, which is vacating the site by April 1993, refused to comment on whether it will put the sale out to competitive tender.
UPS operates a 1,400 strong UK fleet from 20 depots and owns more than 160 aircraft. lt is looking at three potential UK sites.
