• A device to vary the height of a box van roof has narrowly missed winning a top innovation award.
The variable height vehicle, designed by Christian Robinson of Cornwall, was one of three runners up in the transport category of the Honeywell/Sunday Times British Innovation Awards. It uses gas to drive selfcontained springs, which lower and raise the roof, cutting drag when the vehicle is part laden or empty.
The winner was a steering device to stop supermarket trolleys careering sideways.
