A BAN on lorries in London is "absolute nonsense", Labour tran port spokesman Lord Underhill said last week during a House I Lords debate on traffic congestion in the capital.
Peers on both sides of the House were agreed on this point, although Lord Balfour of Inch rye, who opened the debate, said there was a good case f designated lorry routes, back up by enforcement powers.
He said that traffic whi, originated in London created u neccessary congestion at tl busiest times, and suggested b tween 8 am and 5 pm.
Lord Underhill said a genei ban would be economic al would be impractical to admin ter, but he suggested that thE might be scope for transhipmE centres to be developed arou the route of the M25.
